Emotional Regulation starts with Emotional Awareness. What better way to support our children in regulating than through an interactive process of embodying and identifying emotions?
In order to support our children in identifying their feelings and expressing their feelings in ways that align with our understanding, we need to get real with ourselves: what are you feeling right now?
In your mind, in your body?
I invite you to create a series of "emotions cards" or a book with your own emotional expressions. One person's "happy" is another person's "fine." Doing this with your child could be a great exercise in self-awareness. You can definitely expand on this with many different modalities: emotion dances, scribbles, lego structures, sounds, etc.
There are many different feelings words. Sometimes we need to make up a feeling word, as words can be limiting. Here are some of my regular feelings:
